Post musicians you find to be extremely underrated.

I've searched for a thread like this and I don't think any exist. Feel free to delete if there is already a thread like this. My apologies if there is.

Anyway, Jake Morley has some skills. I love the way he uses his guitar as percussion.

The Youngbloods.

Sure, everyone knows "Get Together". But their album "Elephant Mountain," which came out two years after, features songs like these:

...and that's all on the same album.

Oh man, I love the Youngbloods. "On Sir Francis Drake" is a super chill song.

As for personal picks:

- Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Some very understated country/folk music, often depressing but very well-constructed.

- Milton Nascimento. Clube da Esquina is pure genius, but few people have heard it.

- John Martyn: Another understated folk artist. Some may find him boring, but you can't deny his dub experiments were cool as hell.

This is why I love you guys

Also, though it may seem obvious for me to post this, Badfinger.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnb5JeK1hOo

Essay I wrote on why, not only for the quality of the music, but the other circumstances why they should be more celebrated:

Badfinger was signed to Apple records, and were very successful, releasing Top 10 songs such as "Come and Get it", "No Matter What", "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue". They were convinced, by their manager, to, instead of taking direct payment, to found a company, Badfinger Enterprises, and put the money into that, and to make himself, the manager, president of the USA wing of said company. They weren't seeing any money from Apple, though, for their consistent top 20 singles, of which they released 5, within about 3 or 4 years. So, under the impression that Apple was stealing their money, they moved to Warner Bros., and released a really good album that was overshadowed by their own previous success. Then, they released their masterpiece, Wish You Were Here. The band was under an incredible amount of stress; they'd just gotten out of a rut with Apple, signed a two-year, six album contract (3 albums per year - A little over 3 times the standard amount) with WB, they were completely burned out for songwriting, and Pete Ham, the main songwriter and creative force had quit the band. Tom Evans, who was once one of the prime contributors to the band, had a horrible nervous breakdown and ended up only contributing one pop jingle to WYWH. The album (WYWH) was released, and without a single, tour, promo video, advertisements, whatever, charted at around 130 in the first week, and sales were expected to climb because very good reviews had just been posted in several big name music publications. So, things were looking up, right?

As it turned out, their manager, Stan Polley, shoved them back into the studio a week after the release of WYWH, and said “Hey, you have to do another album and you have two weeks to do it. Have fun!” They had no material written, but they did it anyway, and made one of the best albums ever, “Head First”... which the label chose not to release, on the grounds that the manager stole thousands upon thousands of dollars from a Badfinger Enterprises bank account as well as from WB itself. WB's reaction was to pull the album, literally, from the shelves. Pete Ham had a particular investment with this album. It was, and although he wasn't one to ever brag, everyone including him agreed, easily his best work. He slaved over his contributions to the album, and really made it his own, even though he had no will to strain himself so much, because (it gets worse) he was about to have a child, and was STILL seeing no money from any of his successes. Once, he was getting ready to show up for a gig the band was supposed to play, at the time they had a No. 4 hit single and a cover of one of their songs by Harry Nilsson was occupying the No. 1 worldwide spot, and he was wearing his one pair of shoes -- that were completely destroyed, and half of the shoe frame itself wasn't even there anymore. His brother loaned him a pair of his shoes and he never got them back, presumably because he needed them so badly. Once the album was pulled, he took a big emotional hit, snapped, and killed himself, partially because he simply couldn't take it anymore, and partially because he didn't want himself to be "another mouth to feed" economically. He was living with his girlfriend, and her son, and he had his first mortgage he had to pay ever. At the age of 27, he was one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, but all his latest, higher-quality records were massive failures in sales, and he was, in almost every sense of the word, alone. But mostly, he’d simply lost his faith in humanity. He was naïve; he didn’t know about how Polley was managing his band and he'd trusted him. The other members, Joey Molland, Tom Evans, and Mike Gibbins tried to warn and convince him that Polley was mismanaging their finances, but Pete couldn’t be convinced until it was too late. He was truly an artist, was very kind, and there was absolutely no reason for his life to end as it had.

Now, Tom Evans was one of the first people to find Pete's body. To walk into your friend's garage, and to find him hanging from the ceiling, dead is just mortifying... Hence part of the reason why he killed himself too, the same way, about 10 years later. After the band broke up when Pete killed himself, he went back to England and did roofing for a while, until two fans, Joe Tansin and Tony Kaye, ended up convincing Molland and Evans to get back together with them backing them, so they did and released the album “Airwaves” (the album which "Sail Away" is derived from), which was actually pretty solid. Then the band broke up again, but got back together later, to record another album, “Say No More” which was less intended to be a hit and moreso just a closing statement, but was actually very good. After the band broke up following Say No More, Evans recruited Gibbins to form a new version of Badfinger, called, uh, “Badfinger”. The problem: so had Joey Molland. Molland, at this point, basically thought, “I'm awesome, and those other guys are horrible. Look at me!” and called the musicians union, and told them to make sure that Evans’ Badfinger didn’t get any union gigs, and of course they didn’t. They didn’t get any concert appearances, so the group was dissolved, and Evans recorded a handful of demos (later released as “Over You”) which were about his life in general, which was so shaken by everything that he finally, one night, got drunk, and hung himself from a tree in his backyard, the same way his friend Pete had, about ten years before. He never got over Pete's death, and was quoted as saying "I want to be where he is" through his sobs in his more depressive moments. He supposedly was of the mindset that if he’d gone in the same way Pete had, he’d end up in the same place.

They were both musical geniuses, and neither one of them deserved to die when they did.

Of the two other members, the drummer died of cancer in 2006. The former bassist, from before the group got famous is currently battling cancer as well. Joey Molland, who replaced the aforementioned bassist, is still alive, touring and making money from the Badfinger name. He is quoted as saying, “So, if I wasn’t up there on stage, saying ‘this is a Pete Ham song’ or ‘this is a Tom Evans song’, then who will?”, but the irony is that Tom Evans tried to do his own songs and he put a stop to it. The audacity of such a statement is obscene, especially considering the circumstances.

Stan Polley died in 2009.

Finally. Good riddance.

Probably any band that Dan Avidan has been in that isn't Ninja Sex Party or Starbomb. Like Skyhill, which is kind of only known in the Grumps fandom but most people don't really know them. There's also The Northern Hues, too.

Skyhill came out with a song last year, and it got received pretty well, but once again mostly only in the Grumps fandom.

The Apex Theory/Mt. Hellium might be quite possibly one of the most criminally underrated, but jaw-droppingly excellent, alternative nu metal bands of the early-2000s I ever discovered! I can see why many people compare this to System of a Down. Even though a few songs are flawed as hell and are sometimes outdated, I mean for Christ's sake, "Shh... Hope Diggy" screams early 2000s outdated rap metal; at least we got a lot of great masterpieces, including "Apossibly!"
