Whether Ready Player One is good or not, it's gonna make its money back and then some, because it features a single cameo that will draw in all audiences worldwide.

From what I've heard, the movie isn't quite as cringy as the book in those regards and is much more earnest and less...creepery.

Looking at the reviews so far, it's not too bad. The consensus I'm reading is that the nostalgia porn works better on screen than on paper, and it even fixes some of the book's major flaws, albeit not all of them. If anything it sounds like a fun popcorn flick at least, Spielberg certainly knows how to make a good crowd pleaser.

What's frustrating to me about Ready Player One is:

A. The Iron Giant being used as a weapon when it goes against the entire point of his character in his own damn movie - not to mention that the original movie was partially created in response to Brad Bird's own sister being murdered due to gun violence.

B. A generation is about to only know The Iron Giant from Ready Player One instead of the original movie

That brings me to the thing I really, really especially hate about Ready Player One.

The Iron Giant being depicted with that great big giant gun he loved to use so much is symptom of a larger problem. It's clear that they just needed a cool, big, powerful figure in the movie to be a cool, big powerful figure. It could have been a Sentinel from X-Men. It could have been The Hulk. It could have been anyone (so long as the film studio owned the rights to them, lol).

What that means is that for a film so ostensibly about the significance of these pop culture characters and their meaning in each our lives, Ready Player One's reference parade indicates that it treats them as meaninglessly interchangeable. It's vacuous.

Tails Gets Trolled does it better and I mean that unironically.

Actually, I thought of another grievance I wanted to air about Ready Player One lol. Pop culture references can be fun when they're sprinkled throughout a piece of media, but in RPO's case it seems to be the only selling point a.k.a gimmick of the movie. I can guarantee you there's going to be a demographic of beardnecks people who will see this and utter [Name of Character From That Thing They Recognize] whenever a character from that thing they recognize shows up on screen.

Take Stranger Things as an example of the opposite of this. The series may be take place in the 1980's and there may references to Ghostbusters, Dragon's Lair, and Leggo My Eggo that we see and relish at, but the series is also supported by great child actors and an engaging story to offer that keeps us hooked. Ready Player One, on the other hand, doesn't appear to offer anything substantial, from what the trailers have shown. Even the source material the movie is based on seems iffy/questionable at best.

I haven't read the book myself, but if it's as cringy as what's been posted, I don't think I'll bother.

Still, I'm intrigued by the bits of the film I've seen so far, and if there's anyone who can turn mediocre material into gold, it's probably Spielberg. Let's face it, Jaws (the original Peter Benchley book) was nowhere near as good as the Spielberg film.

Went and saw the movie in question after being pressured pretty hard by a group of friends to see it on opening night despite my directions protests. It was a one-night-early showing at 7 pm; no more than 15 people were there. Lol

Yeah, it's shit. I... well... read the book several years ago for a Freshman year free-reading project, so I at least understood some basic context for the movie which, understandably, took quite a few liberties with the adaptation. And that's the main thing the book surprisingly pulled off that a movie never could- a world that feels at least somewhat realized and plausible. Looking back, it is a pretty poorly written novel with a never-ending supply of subplots and hard-to-read paragraphs about how many pop culture references are shoved into the Oasis. As for the movie? I believe it's a standard two-hour runtime, so yeah, it felt pretty hollow. I never once felt engaged or excited. The performances were some of the most unconvincing I've seen from a movie by Spielberg other than Mark Rylance's usual full effort (for what little of the movie he appears in). Without going into too much, there are more than a few jarring plot details and the number of clichés is... something. It felt like I was watching a Stephen Sommers movie with a 2018 facelift at times.

I guess the CG sort of worked okay for most of the movie. Knowing just how much of the film is comprised of it, it could've been a lot worse, but I can't see much of it holding up forever. The nostalgia porn's lack of any subtlety at all could've been worse, too, but there's definitely enough of it to be a turn-off if the trailer wasn't telling enough.

I don't find it strange. You're basically celebrating the work of a director who recently passed on, which is all the more reason to have a look at his pictures, which are a part of his legacy as a filmmaker.

Speaking of The Incredibles, I recently read that the first movie takes place in 1962, because of the date in one of the newspapers and all the aestethic designs of the cars and the fashion.

I thought I read or heard in a commentary that Brad Bird confirmed the film took place in an alternate advanced Sixties/the future as envisioned by the Sixties (not unlike The Jetsons, but nowhere near as extreme obviously); his love for all things retro is also prominent in his other animated film The Iron Giant, though that just takes place in the plain ol' Fifties, Cold War and all.
