The Mountie From Hell

Taco, have you ever read the novel on which the movie is based? The chef plays a more prominent role in it, iirc.

Anyway last night I decided to have a little HORROR MOVIE DOUBLE FEATURE of The Blair Witch Project (I like "found footage" films) and Night of the Living Dead (1968, essential viewing.)

I see a lot of people here mentioning Cabin in the Woods. Guess I should check that out next.

I recently saw The Cabin in the Woods too. Really liked it; I thought it was an interesting deconstruction of the horror genre.

Cloud Atlas is probably the best film I've seen all year, and that's saying something because 2012 has been a stellar year for movies.

So many plot threads, so many characters, so much detail. All held together masterfully by fantastic writing, direction, and acting for almost three hours, without ever becoming tiresome. And contrary to what so many people seem to be saying, it's not difficult to follow as long as you're paying attention.

Everyone should see this damn thing.

Seconding this. I just got back from seeing it and I was blown away. I can't really say much else that RTC hasn't already said. But yeah, go watch it. Easily one of the best films I've seen.

Watched The Killing Fields today. It's absolutely one of the best classical/history film that I have seen.

The film did a good job at explaining the history of the Cambodia Civil War. Plus, it's very easy to follow along the movie. Not to mention that it's interesting that the characters each have their own set of personalities.

I highly recommended seeing The Killing Fields to anybody that hasn't seen it yet.

Having just finished Dawn of the Dead (1978), I'm surprised by how much I found myself laughing throughout it (that

in the credits didn't help). I actually wasn't expecting a comedy, but a comedy is good too.

What? A movie about the Cambodian Genocide with an ending that makes you "fluttery with happiness"?

Actually, I've been thinking about watching The Killing Fields for a while. Maybe I should do that next (along with Cabin in the Woods at some point).

Fuck, I had this whole write up on The Help and my internet ate it.

Long story short: I normally am not a fan of white authors who try to write about what it's like for minorities to experience racism (not because "they're not allowed to," but simply because the finished product usually feels unauthentic). The Help may be one of those rare exceptions, though since I'm not a fact-checker or historian I can't say for certain. Either way, though, I at least enjoyed the movie on its own merits.

I loved the hell out of No Country For Old Men when I first saw it, but it gradually pissed me off each time I went back and watched. Nowadays, all I really like about is the cinematography, the sound design and the general eeriness of it.

The Loved Ones

Pretty good. Nothing special, but clever for a slasher/torture flick.

It's an Australian movie, so it has this completely periphery comic relief story that serves little purpose aside from allowing the film to be released with a lower rating in it's home country. Politics and film, yaaaaaay. Even with an exorbanant amount of padding, the damn thing barely tops in at an hour and twenty minutes. A good ride, but damn, that's short as fuck.

I re-watched Captain America.

It's not a perfect movie but I enjoyed it.

I laughed out loud like 10 times at the ridiculous stuff that happens in it.

The movie felt very patriotic and idealistic so I wasn't really bothered by the action being unrealistic.

The third act was kind of weak and felt very rushed but it wasn't a train wreck or anything.

It just would have been more satisfying if the pacing didn't speed up so much near the end.

American society has a fascination with punching Nazis and Captain America is just the right guy to do the punching.

The Nightmare Before Christmas. I loved it a lot, it's a very classical and decently made movie. The songs were fun to listen and the animation is stunning.
