I'm finally working on a game, got a programmer and a musician but I can't find a decent animator for the life of me. Anyone here know where I could find some?

SO I'm bumping this thread because I really wanna make a simple point 'n click game, yet the only viable free option I've been able to find is Adventure Game Engine, which looks, feels, and has features that honestly make me think it hasn't evolved much since the early 90s. Is there a simple, easy to use 2D game engine that would let me do this and doesn't cost like $100+ for a personal license? I know RPG Maker VX costs like $30 so something like this isn't too far-fetched an idea, right?

Eeeexcept that's literally what I'm talking about. The regular GameMaker license is at least $150, and the Construct2 license is about $130. People might immediately yell "torrent it you idiot" but I've been reeeeally wary of cracks and keygens lately... not to mention I have absolutely no idea where people torrent their stuff nowadays anyways!

I've been thinking I might as well just program the entire thing from scratch. I do have this engineering degree after all, might as well use it for something nice for once.

Yes, a limited version that, as far as I can understand, can't export to regular Windows executables and instead relies on YoYoGames' weird distribution service.

EDIT: Upon further investigation apparently you CAN export to Windows exes, the main difference is that the pro edition uses a special compiler that takes advantage of actual machine code. Interesting stuff!

So I feel really satisfied right now.

I was coming up with an outline of choices for a situation in my game a moment ago and I was stuck on a way to get two gangs to go after you; I'd already mapped out two separate branches but for whatever reason a way to join the two just didn't occur to me until now.

I'll go into more detail and perhaps post the outline itself if anyones curious. Nonetheless, I feel very very accomplished. It's great whenever my brain decides to actually work.

There's a open source 2D and 3D game development tool called Superpowers that's coming out soon and I'm pretty excited for it.

    http://superpowers-html5.com/

I'll have to keep an eye out on this because so far I'm finding it difficult getting into the groove of Yoyo Gamemaker. Everything feels like it's organized or placed in weird menus and supposedly it's beginner friendly but doesn't explain what things are. I have to go to the site and look it up each time, which is fine if I'm online but kind of sucks if I'm not. I might still just have to get over the learning curve before I start really getting the hang of it, like when I transitioned from Adobe Premiere to Sony Vegas and everything seemed backwards but over time I came to love Vegas' organization of things.

Anyways, I'm just starting out and I still have a lot more outlining to do but I have the basic concept of the game down. I'm attempting to do something kind of odd in that it's a game that I first thought up back when I first played Fire Emblem Blazing Sword. I want to make the game an RPG with instanced battles where both sides fight turn by turn, a typical traditional RPG like Final Fantasy. However, like older Fire Emblem games, your character never fights directly. Yeah, I realize in more recent games your main character tactician does fight but the older games are what inspired me. Undertale also sort of reminded me, but it didn't directly inspire me, of the choice to not hurt people. Anyways, I've always liked games where you don't necessarily have to go out and kill people like the Harvest Moon series, so after playing so many games where I'm killing things violently I realized some of my favorite games are where you aren't violent at all.

I'm planning on the character being a glorified heckler, hanging on the sideline and doing various things to determine battle outcomes. What tactics you use kind of determine who you are (and factor into the multiple endings). You'll be able to use words for a diplomatic and peaceful route or mock and attack them with harsh truths, various items can be used like a small mirror to blind someone using the sun to shine in their eyes (which I'm planning on making it fail if the player tries to do that at night), and there will be other sort of environmental opportunities like paying off the crowd to cheer in favor of one of the fighting parties. Anyways, right now I just have a whole lot of ideas and I like to think I'm good at writing and coming up with level design BUT my road block is definitely going to be the artistic side. Once I get farther into development I might have to hire an artist but I'm nowhere close to that yet. I plan on making the game pretty heavily story driven and relying on my ability to write in some good storytelling and characters, since the game is essentially going to be choosing actions from a menu and seeing a textual result like everyone's seen in these types of RPGs.

I have worked with Game Maker for what feels like as long as I've been proficient with a computer. I am very familiar with it but it's still pretty clunky. As mentioned in another thread, I've been working on two games for what feels like a decade, but I've narrowed my sights on one in particular (I'm not really ready to talk about it yet).

I think I'm going to use RPG Maker MV to make the one I want now. It has JavaScript capability and HD resolution/high quality asset support so I think I can use it to easily realize my project that's been dancing around forever.

I can talk about my previous project though. I don't think I want to outright cancel it, shelve it for another day, but I don't think I'd make it (if ever) for a while. It was called Benjamin Bubble. It was about the eponymous bubble trying to rescue the Mayor of his isolated village, Bubb Burg. He collected Soul Soap along the way that led the way. It was, as you might have imagined, a 2D platformer. I made an excellent 2D platforming engine in Game Maker that was 60fps, material-based, had XInput support, and supported HD assets (I want to make all of my games hand-drawn). Then I took too long to make it and 7 million indie platformers came out in the interim, making mine another drop in bucket. Someday, maybe. I have a fully completely design doc I might post here sometime.

I remember trying to make an RPG maker game using my own art as assets when I was younger. Unfortunately my computer inexplicably broke down and had to be trashed. My parents threw it away while I was at school without consulting me first, and so I couldn't save my hard drive. I still have some of the music, but my favourite music, the battle and boss themes, were lost. I had worked on them the most and saved them for last. Sigh!

Maybe someday I'll make a tiny rpg story. Depending on its reception, I wouldn't mind making a longer one. Small steps are the best to start with though. I'm done with unfinished projects.

I'm not sure if I'll post the design doc in full to Benjamin Bubble because I might want to make it someday (not that I'm afraid anyone here will 'steal it' or that it's spoiler-riffic), but we'll see. I'll upload the game maker file when I get time.

Today I want to talk about my newest game I'm working on a little bit. Project Eternity, which is still the codename, is an RPG about a woman named Cyan who hails from a species that has, through the course of evolution, been genetically and cybernetically modified to be very long of life (but not immune to death); she is over 600 years old. Her occupation is bounty hunter; she collects targets designated by her government for cold hard credits. Her long life has given her plenty of time to become a clumsy smartass who prefers talking before doing.

You go from target to target, world to world in your small ship The Periwinkle, designated by contracts you take, as marked on your map. You can choose to subdue these targets or try to talk your way into an agreement. The story will change drastically depending on which you decide.

The combat, if you so choose to pursue it, will either be real time or turn based...I can't decide which. The whole game will be 3/4th view 2D, totally hand draw with a pastel art style. There will be puzzles.

I would like to make this in RPG Maker MV (I do not own it yet, not enough money). I've been wrestling with Game Maker for too long and I'd like to just make something. This is the first time I've really told anybody about this (except in private to a few people). I'm still trying to finish up the design document and everything. I would very much be welcome to constructive criticism as I share more and more about it and get deeper into its development.

I've been working on and off a clone of Undertale's battle system over the past few months, mainly as an exercise in coding something RPG-like. The main battle options don't work and the proper font hasn't been implemented yet, but enemy attacking (and dodging) and type-writer-like dialog works! It's made in Construct 2 and is browser-based, so just click here to try it: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/64897887/blundertale/index.html

I was invited by the dev team I'm working with to attend GDC right here in San Francisco. Unfortunately I have a desk job, so I wouldn't have the time.

    :icon_sad:

Oh well; it would've been like $250, and all I would've done was stand there and go "Yup, this sure is a game I'm writing. We've got some concept art. Some character bios. That's about it. Woooo!"
