When I revisited Pokemon Gold a few years ago on my SP, I got to enjoy a backlight and all that good stuff. Of course, the tradeoffs were that I had an unsightly cartridge roughly a third the size of the console jutting out of it awkwardly, and it wasn't able to retain saved games anymore, which meant that I would have to leave it on and keep it hooked up to a charging cable pretty much all the time. Still fun though.

As far as collecting goes I've said it a million times over the last several years and every year it gets worse and worse but it's a hobby I seriously cannot recommend for anyone just starting from scratch.  I began to see the writing on the wall when NES and SNES became really expensive around 2008 so by the time I got a job I traveled to local stores sweeping up whatever cheap games I could find on the Genesis, PSX, Saturn, Sega CD, etc. etc.  And as far as Gamestop goes any time a relatively interesting game came in on PS2, I bought it.  I mostly ignored Gamecube since besides a few choice titles I had just about every game I was interested in -- barring really obscure titles that I could never find originally.  When Gamestop began ceasing PS2 and GCN support I had to jump through a shitload of hoops to get certain titles like Beatmania with the turntable and Cubivore, both of which at the time were like $10 each....in retrospect I kind of wish I had did that for Gotcha Force since that was never on my radar for "Games I know will become fucking expensive in a few years", but you know what they say about hindsight.  Either way I can't complain because I made a really good decision in picking up most of the games that I did at the time.

That might be an interesting little article to make, too.  I had a lot of predictions from a decade ago about the state of collecting and I was right in many ways (Most notably in my assumption that prices would not go down but would continue to rise), I was way off on others (Most notably in not realizing just how much more expensive these expensive games would become) and then there's just little oddities spread throughout (Like, for example, Tail Concerto, a game that I still have the receipt for a buy 2 get 1 free sale at Gamestop from 2007 where it was initially $6 or so, suddenly overnight became a $50-60 game when Solatorobo came out, and continues to rise to this day; nevermind Solatorobo itself, another story entirely).  I also completely underestimated how big Youtube would become at the time and its growing effect on the marketplace, where one popular Youtuber can talk about a game like, say, Chulip, and increase the price from five times its old value (Another game I ignored and I worked at a Gamestop that had a new copy for $10 for about 3 years.  I didn't find 'weird' games like that interesting back then and now that I find them kind of fascinating I'm pretty miffed I chose to ignore it).

That being said, PS2 and especially Xbox are well within acceptable levels of prices these days and now Wii, PS3, and 360 games are astronomically cheap barring a few titles here and there, mostly on Wii, and even the expensive Wii titles are spread pretty few and far between.  So that's something.

Unless I'm running out of GameBoy/Color/Advance and PSX/2 games to collect, something of a feat, there's no need to hunt down other consoles for me, as much I wouldn't mind getting an SNES and a Mega Drive just for the sake of playing titles that weren't released anywhere else.

Usually when it comes to retro game collecting, it's something that comes up if I get a bit bored and don't see much going on in the next few weeks.

I prefer to play retro games on their original consoles if I can, as I think it makes the experience feel more genuine, and I'll generally try to get a physical copy if I can get it for a reasonable price. However if the physical copy is somehow ridiculously expensive and overpriced, then I'll opt for a digital download instead if the option is available. That's the reason I bought Kirby 64 and Paper Mario off the Wii U eShop, as while I did enjoy those games back when I rented them, getting the original N64 cartridges is quite a task that asks for plenty of money, and for the prices people are asking for those games, I don't feel they're really worth that much. And while emulation is the most affordable option, I find that when it comes to emulation of consoles beyond the Super Nintendo and the Mega Drive, results can sometimes be questionable in which some games simply cannot be emulated that well at all. And if the game requires some kind of peripheral controller to play, you might as well go physical, because trying to get something like that working on an emulator would only complicate things way more than necessary.

I just get annoyed whenever there's a game I'm interested in checking out that came out years ago, but there isn't a release of it available on modern consoles in any form, and the prices people charge for it online are absurd. I mean, I wouldn't mind giving Path of Radiance on the GameCube a shot, but there's no way in hell I'm going to pay $200 or more just to do so.

I like trying to collect to some degree on all my systems, except for my Saturn, really. I went all out a few years ago when I got my Saturn and installed a mod chip so I could play CD-R backups. Trying to collect the real copies of all the games I want on it would kill me. It doesn't help that prices of some games I wanted have really gone up. Last time I checked a few years ago, a title like Magic Knight Rayearth was around 100 bucks for a used copy. Since then, it quadrupled in price and I only ever find it for four or five hundred. Panzer Dragoon Saga is still as expensive as ever, of course, although I have played it from backup and I don't think I would want to pay more than 200 for a complete copy.

It's no big deal, since all the money I would otherwise spend on the games goes into really nifty accessories for the system. I got an arcade stick, a model 02 controller, a 3D joystick, a multi-tap, and a memory cart.

I do have a few rather rare games on my other systems, though. I still have my copy of Gotcha Force from when it first launched and I love it way too much to ever sell it. Got both versions of Skies of Arcadia as well, and I still have my Earthbound cart as well.

I guess I'd consider myself a collector, I've got games pretty much every Christmas & spent most of my carrying around money on them and have never sold anything, so I've amassed around 250+ games through my lifetime. Though I don't buy games to collect them, I've played pretty much everything I own (except Steam games). Lucky for me nowadays, the games I've been on the lookout for are pretty cheap.

I wouldn't consider myself to be a collector in the slightest. The libraries I've developed for each of my consoles are all pretty small, and I've only gone back to buy a handful of games that I either didn't play as a kid or wound up selling at some point. I mean, there are several that I sort of regret getting rid of, but I'm not in a hurry to pick up another copy of them anytime soon. For example, if I want a cartridge of Mario Kart 64, they seem to be starting around $54 on Amazon. No thanks.

@SuperYoshi I would be interested an in reading an article about your game collecting and all that other stuff.

I imagine you have quite a few games in your collection? If you have it on display, it would be neat to see some pictures. I really like looking at bookshelves full of cartridges and game cases. Some people like the feeling of being in libraries surrounded by old books. I get the same enjoyment from a library of cartridges.

We probably have a thread for pictures of our gaming setups and whatnot. Maybe we can all give that thread a bump with updated photos. I dig talking about retro and nostalgic stuff this time of year.

I'm glad I took notice when Gamestop was getting rid of their Gamecube and PS2 games. I managed to snatch up a few titles that I never had the chance to own, but rented dozens of times over the years.

Though a couple years after they had stopped selling Gamecube games I found out that my location still had a bunch in a drawer. Only one was in a box, DDR Mario Mix, so that was a pretty neat find.

As a kid, I traded my Nintendo 64 and all the games I owned with it (Mario 64, Pokemon Stadium 1+2, Pokemon Snap, Kirby 64, Rogue Squadron, DK64, Smash 64, Namco Museum, and Hey You Pikachu w/ mic) into Rhino's, which was basically a better version of Gamestop before they got bought out by Gamestop. I think I got around $200 for it all including accessories.

Regret it a lot. Emulation is a thing yeah but when it comes to pre-Gamecube there's just something about playing on a shitty CRT with the actual console and controller.

I have, uh, a lot.  A little less than 1200.  I don't have that many pictures, though.  Just a few from my dad's house from several years ago

Not even close to everything, but just kind of what was out at the time.

And nevermind the fucking massive amount of guides and magazines and other assorted books I have

That's not even close to half the magazines either.  And I even threw out a shitload of late 2000s issues of Game Informer and the like.

I recently moved into my own place a few months ago and everything's still in boxes, just about.  I don't know how I did it but I somehow managed to move everything, including the magazines and guides down here.  It just hasn't all been set up yet because I'm lazy and I need to get more shelves.

Personally, I think I'm about to offload the rest of my collection. I don't have enough time or space to really justify it anymore, unfortunately. I'll probably only keep what isn't perfectly emulatable (PS/Saturn/N64 gen and up).

I knew you had a ton. That is really cool. That's the kind of collection I would love to have but there's no way I could put that kind of time or money into this.

I figure our setups have changed and expanded over time. Many of us have probably moved into new homes since our old photos were taken. I found a thread and it's not as old as I thought it was.

I would post my own if I had a good setup. I do not own any nice furniture. I want to buy a nice, wooden entertainment center and bookshelf one these days. What I have now is a hand-me-down, mismatch setup. Games are not on display, but in boxes. It isn't worth taking pictures of. Someone else should totally bump the thread and get the ball rolling.

I haven't bought a lot of old games recently. Mostly because I have almost everything I want on the systems I own and prices are just getting ridiculous all over. I still go out to flea markets and whatever frequently to do hunting, but I rarely find anything that I've never seen before. I even went to a con a while back thinking I'd find something cool, expensive, but cool, and I found nothing. It wasn't a big con, but still. I remember finding all sorts of NES/SNES games at yard sales or flea markets on the cheap like eight years ago, Contra, Super C, Castlevania 1-4, Megaman 1-6 ect all for five bucks, now I don't find jack shit and it's all ebay prices. I haven't even been in the collecting game for a relatively long time compared to people who were doing it in the 90s and early 2000s, but the landscape went to hell years ago and anyone who wants to jump in now or doesn't have a headstart will not have a good time.

Also since it's relevant have a pic of my game shelf that I've posted once before:

RfnNcV7.jpg

I don't have a gorillion games like SY but I'm proud of it, most of this was through finds in flea markets and yard sales or game stores I've visited on travels, only a handful of things were online purchases, because paying online prices is no fun.

Yeah, for all the shit I do have there's a surprising amount of games that I don't have.  Like the only NES Mega Man game I own is 3 and I've had that since, like, 2004 or something.  I'd like to own the others, but it's like at this point I really don't feel like paying that crazy amount for them, especially 1.  And I have all of the Rockman Complete Works games on PlayStation which are pretty much the definitive versions of the games and what I'd prefer to play them on to begin with so it's not like I'd ever really touch the cartridges.  I don't have Castlevania 3 for whatever reason, maybe eventually but I doubt it at this point.  Metroid, Kid Icarus, all games I used to have and stupidly sold to Gamestop for probably pennies 15 odd years ago.  They're not expensive, but I never got around to getting replacement copies and at this point I'm kind of done spending money on games unless it's something really special so at this point I'll probably never have them again.  Still mad Mike Matei did a video on Rockin Kats recently.  I've been eyeing that game for years and now it's mad fucking expensive because he and Ryan did a video and he just fucking had to mention it's an uncommon Atlus game.

Honestly come to think of it I don't think I even own any uncommon NES games.  I mean, I was never too big on NES collecting but the most expensive game I probably have is Ninja Gaiden 3 and I literally only came across that rather recently when someone brought it into Gamestop a few years ago and just didn't want it when I said we don't take back old stuff.  That's how I got my TG-16, too, haha.  Fun times.

Ah, one step ahead I see. Good good.

NES is my favorite system to collect for. Platformers are my favorite genre which is the system's main attraction and a lot of the games are still relatively cheap, you can still get fantastic games like Batman, Blaster Master, Ninja Gaiden, Jackal, Life Force ect today for not a lot. The most uncommon games I have for it are Metal Storm and S.C.A.T and Megaman 1 and 5. The latter two really ballooned in price since I got them holy shit.
