Walking on the Moon: The Untold Story of the Police and the Rise of New Wave Rock

I'm not bothered by the text's belittling tone but I'm not impressed by anything either. Most of the information in the book doesn't seem to be anything I haven't seen already, too.

I read Sting's Broken Music quite quickly and then moved on to One Train Later by Andy Summers. The latter hasn't been translated to my native language, but I can actually understand the English version just fine. The story about the beginnings of one of my favorite bands is fascinating to me, and I will continue to check out other rock star biographies that I've seen in the library.

Matilda by Roald Dahl. I had a translated version in my childhood, but this time around I read the book as originally penned in English. Now, I am one sluggish reader, so even a richly illustrated book for children takes me a while to get through, although I enjoy it nonetheless. The first 50 pages mostly take place within the Wormwood household and serve to describe character dynamics and provide comedy; I just began the chapter where she goes to school.

I'm almost done reading the biography of Frank Zappa written by Barry Miles. I didn't know much about Zappa or his music before this so it's been a fun read.

Funny, I rarely read books but during this month I've read four. I don't have much to do at the moment...

It's for a term paper, but I adore Heaney's poetry outside of my university work. Station Island is among my most favourite poems in general

Wow, it's been a while since I've posted in here. I haven't stopped reading, though. Actually, I have a lot to get through here.

Song of Solomon - Absolutely loved it, need to read more Morrison.

Emma - I'm not big on Jane Austen, but this is probably the best one I've read. Helps that it's funnier and the main character is very flawed.

David Copperfield - For a Dickens class. It's okay, a little too maudlin for my tastes, and way too long.

Bleak House - People say this is Dickens' "difficult" work, but I actually enjoyed it much more than Copperfield. The multiple narrators were an unexpected "modern" touch. Still, though, I won't be re-reading it any time soon. (There was a third book in the class, but I didn't even bother reading it.)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - A lot funnier than I thought it was going to be, scarier too. Definitely a product of its time, but still a great read.

Ulysses - What I'm currently reading for class. It's making me feel a lot of different things, which is interesting, but it's also one of those books that you need a guide to read. I don't regret starting it, though. Let's see where it takes me.

Eleanor and Park.

71LkLmxqgjL.jpg

It makes me sick. I hate this book, I hate the characters, and I hate the decisions that Eleanor and her family make.

And a bunch of book's about China's economy. At first glance it looks ultra complex, but once you get down to it it's not so bad.

The Old Man and the Sea

Its format is very comfortable to read when I eat breakfast and supper. I found this copy at one grandmother's house, and it's a specially adapted version meaning that every second page is set aside to explain words and idioms; that's been very helpful since I'm not a native English reader. But I am not sure whether they made changes to the original text, however.

That's...pretty cool, actually.  It's neat to know that versions like that exist.

Reminds me of this one time in school I saw a copy of Catch-22 on a shelf near my desk. Inside, annotations had been handwritten in in pen explaining meanings of some seemingly cryptic phrases and spotting some literary references.  I didn't see much before putting it back thought it was amazing and I regret not thinking to at least ask if I could borrow it for a bit.

Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas

I'm about halfway through and it's pretty good. It is a little hard to follow at times though, but seeing as how it's Hunter S. Thompson that's to be expected.

I tried really hard to work my way through Naked Lunch but it turned out to be too annoying for me to finish it. Some parts are really funny and well-written, but just as many parts feel like bad snuff porn and contain about as much sophistication as your average toddler yelling POOP in the classroom.
