My Windows 10 today had an update and I can't open my Start Menu or use the Search Bar. I've restarted the computer 3 times and I did a system check for corrupted files. None of those ways have worked. I've been hearing from a couple of people that you have to reboot your PC, but I'm afraid of doing it because it would uninstall a ton of programs I have like Vegas and Steam. Is there a way to get the Start Menu working without having to risk on destroying anything?

My laptop has a blackscreen and wont connect to external monitors.

I think its a software driver problem.

But I dont know how computer repair technicians would access the laptop software if that is the case.

WinDirStat is a great tool. It scans a drive of your choosing and shows you a visual of what's taking up all your space. So you can single out files you don't need and delete them accordingly. If you're looking to free some drive space, you should use it. It's pretty awesome. I used it to free up about 8GB worth of space from my SSD by deleting a bunch of Premiere's caching and render files from the last time I was using it. (Tho, I should've been smart enough to change the directory of where cache files are stored to my HDD, lmao). Btw, if you're wondering what those large red ones over to the right are, they're important system files. One of them is the pagefile. If you see large .dll or .sys files, dnt delete them. They're likely very important files and Windows and/or installed programs will probably not work properly afterwards. I know that some are probably gonna end up deleting something really important by accident if I don't say so.

Need some help with Firefox.

The latest update completely broke the Classic Theme Restorer plugin, which is crucial for me. I found workarounds for a lot of things, but currently my stop, reload, back and forward buttons are invisible and I don't know why. Anyone possibly able to help?

So yeah, I think the Windows 10 update pretty much messed up with my Winamp's video codec; which means I can't show videos on there anymore (aka the sound is playing but the picture isn't showing), not only that but it also messed up other players except for Media Player Classic, which is weird. I tried reinstalled Winamp, but nothing happened. Researching this said problem didn't help either because most of them were from older versions of Winamp. If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know. And before you guys ask, yes I have K-Lite Codec installed, and I think the update pretty much messed up with the codec. Hopefully the next update fixes this problem.

I reset/rebooted my computer altogether but I kept my pictures, documents, and videos to get rid of my Wi-Fi problem. The only problem is that Windows also deleted most programs that I use such as video editors, plugins, drawing tablet drivers, etc. Is there any way to recover these?

I feel arguably due for another computer since my main driver is a 3 year old laptop with an AMD A4 in it. I mean, it works and still functions quite well, all things considered, but I think age and performance wise it is getting to a point where I'm willing to demote it to a tier 2 PC to easily lug around with me just in case I need it. I have a fair amount of money right now to bring a few budget offerings to another desktop I have, but it's a Socket 775 motherboard, and while there are CPUs still capable for it, I think they are reaching the end of their lifespan. I need something more recent.

You could try Recuva however I'm unsure if that will resolve your issue completely.

Not apart from re-running the installers. Unless you had tried this and it didn't work, I would recommend using the troubleshooting tool for your wi-fi if you encounter this problem again. Many times it's something as silly as the NIC not knowing where the DHCP is for an IP address, or just needs restarted, which the troubleshooter fixes very easily.

So I had this earlier as I was shutting down my computer before going to lunch with my dad...

hOvOkyt.jpg

If you can't read it, it says "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT". Keep in mind, I didn't have any programs running as I was shutting the computer down when this happened.

When I came back home, I did some investigating and ran my memory diagnostics tool, which found nothing. So I did a full system check via SupportAssist (a program that comes with all Dell and Alienware computers), and it also found nothing and said everything was hunky-dory. No problems with RAM or anything like that. All my drivers and Windows itself are also up to date (I'm on Windows 10). So whatever happened, beats the hell out of me, but thankfully, it hasn't shown up again since I did the stuff I mentioned already.

My guess is that it's a glitch, if nothing else. Well, that's Microsoft for ya...

If it helps bro, I had a similar issue with my Alienware 17 R4. I restarted with almost nothing open, and then got a blue screen. I don't remember the exact error message but it may or may not have been the same "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" one you got. However, it only happened once and I haven't gotten it since.

So for a long time, I've been wanting to build my own PC. Real life has always gotten in the way, but goddamnit I'm either going to have something built or at the very least have purchased some of the more expensive parts during Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales before 2017 is over.

Right now, I'm going off the Modest Gaming Build on pcpartpicker:

TGPQehb.png

I don't know much about computers. Like, I can obviously use one fine, but when it comes to the physical parts and knowing what's good and what isn't I have little understanding past looking at recommended stuff like this.

Currently, my needs are:

- Starts up quickly and isn't too loud or hot
- Can run most modern games at medium/high settings consistently at 60+ FPS
- Easy to upgrade

There are certain games where I am fine sacrificing some visual quality for performance, such as open world or some multiplayer titles where I'll want less visual "noise" anyways, but mostly I want them to look good. I don't need maxed out ULTRA 4K I CAN SEE EVERY BLADE OF GRASS AND BEAD OF ASSCRACK SWEAT settings, so I just need to know if these parts can reach what I'm looking for right now.

Nier Automata, Injustice 2, PUBG, Destiny 2, and Wolfenstein 1+2 are ideas of some games that I'll want to play first.

The easy to upgrade point is probably most important, and why the case in that build surely needs to be different; I have plenty of room on my desk for a full tower if necessary, and I want something where swapping parts or adding more RAM will be a quick and painless process. This is one I'm interested in, but if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears.

And finally, here are a few scans of Newegg's Black Friday ad, if anyone could tell me if some of these parts would be better for me I'd appreciate it (or if there are any other upcoming good part sales!):

Spoiler

pJ4uzHp.png
sEbPw8L.png

Would the RX580 be better for my purposes, since it's the same price as the 1060? My friend had the RX480 last year and he loved it, not sure if the 580 was just as good.

Thanks to anyone who can help me with anything here. I know it's a corner of a dead internet forum, but there are some people here that know their shit and hopefully one of y'all can help a tech retard out.

Have you tried Logical Increments? I found it helpful for picking out parts in the price range I wanted to go for.

http://www.logicalincrements.com/

It looks like you're hovering around the "Very Good" tier, which puts you around the processing power of a PS4 Pro. Not bad, but you could probably save a few hundred bucks with some smart shopping.

For some of the games you mentioned, if you're running them at 1080p, you'll get pretty good performance. I'm the last person to go to with computer-building advice since I just barely managed to scrap mine together, but I'd recommend taking a look here.

Oh, and unless you know what you're doing or have a friend who does, have someone else build your PC. People will tell you "it's a good learning experience", but if you don't know what you're doing it's a fucking nightmare and you could end up damaging your parts before the system's even up and running.

I would say try to build it yourself, but also have someone you're able to contact if you need help. PC parts aren't as fragile as they feel, so you're not working with eggshells. Except maybe pins on the processor, I've fucked that up once...

Tweaked build after doing some research+getting advice from youchew (aka Whelt) and reddit. I grabbed all of the items marked purchased so far between yesterday and today; the 1600X was only ten dollars more than the 1600 so I went ahead with that instead. Also, while liquidcooling is unnecessary for my purposes as of now, I went ahead and got a nice one anyways because my room is very poorly ventilated (in the summer time it's literally 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house), so the more heat I can remove the better, and since it was on a decent sale I might as well get one now. Pcpartpicker noted I might need an AM4 bracket to mount it, I'm guessing I just have to contact Corsair for one (free hopefully?), but other than that no compatibility issues with my build.

The full tower case I've been debating with myself still, I'd like the extra space to work in but after watching some youtube videos and seeing how truly massive they are, I feel like my case is going to look empty af lol. It does give me plenty of room for the future like I wanted, but I'm wondering if for a personal rig having a case that big is just a meme. I haven't seen any case sales that excite me yet for mid or full towers though so I've got time to decide.

I'll see if anything good pops up on Cyber Monday, and then the rest of the parts I'll chip away at the weeks leading up to Christmas; I already have a mouse, I asked for a keyboard for Christmas, and my dad supposedly can get me Windows 10 Home for free from his work, so hopefully I can have my build completely finished by New Year's.

It is very exciting for me to finally be making some headway on this.

I'm considering getting a 4K monitor. My roommate (who has a monstrous machine) says I should just go for 4K and run games at that; it would also solve the problem of streaming games to my TV through Steam Link at 4K (at least once Steam finally patches the app to go above 1080p). Problem is, it'd run me at least $500-600, whereas my current monitor runs for $400 (meaning realistically I could sell it for $300-350 at the most). I want 4K, but I'm unsure if it's worth that $200-300 turnaround. That's even more than the $100-200 turnaround from upgrading my PS4 to a PS4 Pro. And again, this is mostly meaningless until Steam learns how to stream at higher than 1080p.

So something I decided to try doing with my computers recently was downloading that Folding at Home program. For anyone unfamiliar, it's a program made by Stanford that does protein folding calculations and sends the results back to help with their research on cancer/Alzheimer's/etc., basically outsourcing some of the immense computing power needed for such work to those willing to help out. Figured that since I have an old laptop that gets no use and two towers that sit on and idle all the friggin time because I'm too lazy to turn them off, giving them something to do while I'm at work would be a productive use of the electricity they're consuming anyway. As expected, my main rig cranks out calculations the fastest, the rhythm gaming computer's older parts less so, and the laptop...well, it's a $450 piece of work I bought back in 2012 so I would have portable Excel for my master's degree work, so I never expected it to exactly send me to the top of the leaderboards, but at least this way it would have a purpose again. Fast-forward to two weekends ago, some heavy wind and rain hit my place and knock out the power for a few hours. Towers are down, laptop still appears to be chugging along on a battery I thought lost all capacity for power years ago. I gain a little respect for the poor thing, go over to see if I can get some music playing on it while I wait for the lights to come back on, mouse doesn't move, and I realize it's been frozen and brain-dead for probably days...so nope, it can't even help cure cancer and I have a $450 paperweight sitting in my basement.

So ultimately what I'm trying to say here is that Folding at Home is a neat idea, my laptop is a useless piece of junk, and for the first time in 7 years I'm thinking about getting a laptop with the muscle for some modern games. Anyone got any tips or recommendations as to a good portable machine on which to shoot polygonal mans?
